Young Adults & Binge Drinking: Why Gen Z Is Seeking Recovery Support Early?

Generation Z, or Gen Z, is a different generation from those that came before. While we hear this claim with every new generation, we can actually see this zeal to be different with Gen Z. One brilliant shift we see is in drinking habits. Gen Z consumes nearly one-third less beer and wine than generations that came before them, while they are also shifting toward alcohol-free beverages more so than anybody else before. The question we will explore here is why!

The ‘Sober Curious’ Generation

Sober curious has become a cool lifestyle choice. It is not embracing teetotalism as a lifestyle choice, but exploring sober ways of leading life. For instance, we see many Gen Z following the “Dry January” trend, like millennials followed the “No Shave November” trend. However, the former, we think, is a healthier option? Indeed, yes!

Instead of embracing alcohol and other drugs as the centerpiece of social life, Gen Z is questioning their status as the life and soul of fun and parties. While it cannot be said that Gen Z has sworn off these substances entirely, they are more open to questioning them.

As they question, they are having deep conversations where they are growing up to be more conscious of the choices they make – whether it is healthy for them or the environment, or not? These difficult yet must-have conversations are changing sobriety from a taboo to something cooler.

Wellness First!

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that alcohol is linked to a number of health complications, including liver disease and cancer. However, historically, such awareness has been low.

With Gen Z, this is changing. With growing health consciousness, younger generations are opting for healthier lifestyle choices that put wellness over immediate pleasures and later regrets – like hangovers, headaches, vomiting, dehydration, and even withdrawal.

Furthermore, along with millennials, Gen Z are also more likely to seek treatment for their drinking habits (like binge drinking) and other mental health complications. Coupled with this, the sober curious movement also encourages people to evaluate their relationship with alcohol and reflects the broader shift toward mindfulness and informed decision-making.

Drinking Less, But Using More?

A 2023 Gallup survey found that those who drink under the age of 35 dropped to 62% in 2023 from 72% in 2003. Indeed, these last two decades have seen quite a shift.

However, it must be noted that binge drinking is still a matter of concern – the age group most likely to engage in binge drinking episodes is the young adult age group. Furthermore, with the rise of TikTok trends like BORG drinking, this is always going to be a risk.

On the other hand, Gen Z is not immune to psychoactive substances entirely either. While drinking has reduced, using drugs like marijuana has only increased.

It is unclear whether the preference for drinks has reduced because of increased access to drugs like marijuana. However, the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that 36.5% aged 18 to 25 consumed marijuana in the last year.

Stress, Escapism, and Social Media Influence

Behind these statistics is one truth – this world has become increasingly fast-paced and digitized. This means that there is more stress generally, and when you add social media influence and comparison, everything just becomes exacerbated.

For some, substances seem like a good way to have fun, while for others, self-medication becomes a way to escape the stress, pain, and suffering.

At the same time, platforms like Instagram and TikTok glamorize BORG drinking and drug use, often glossing over the consequences. This dangerous mix of stress and glamorization can push young adults into dangerous cycles faster than they realize.

Seeking Help Sooner, Not Later

The good news? With increased information and awareness, Gen Z is quicker to recognize when they are struggling.

As mental health has improved by leaps and bounds, stigma and discrimination have also decreased. So, seeking psychotherapy and medication has become more normalized than before,   and resources have become increasingly accessible.

While we have touched upon how social media has been detrimental in some ways, we must also mention that social media in itself has been playing a role in increasing awareness about seeking help. Increased knowledge and a proactive mindset allow Gen Z to build healthier habits, prioritize self-care, and protect their future.
